"Again?" the large alpha male roared, his claws creating deep furrows in the sandy cave floor.
Speestorm's paws shuffled on the ground. "I'm- I'm sorry, Morg. But I didn' see no reason ta kill 'im," he mumbled.
Morg buried his head in his paws, then lifted it again. "You seem to see no reason to kill him every time you encounter him," he snarled. "I should've known better than to bring in a wolf from the Streets. I knew you'd grow soft."
"I'm sorry for interrupting, sir..." Morg snapped his gaze over to another male named Flit, who had began speaking. "But Speedstorm did injure that mongrel again, he shouldn't be bothering us for a while," he said proudly.
"I don't care!" Morg shouted as he spat on the ground. "All I've ever taught you ramshackle lot is to use brute force! Haven't I?" He glanced from wolf to wolf.
Both looked at their paws and mumbled a quiet 'yes.' Then, Speedstorm brought his head up.
"I-I promise I'll make it up ta ya!" he said.
"Make sure that you do this time around," Morg grumbled. He then started to bristle. "Now get outta here before I make you!"
Speedstorm and Flit yelped in fright at the alpha's sudden outburst and ran rather skittishly out of the den.
Not even a moment after they left, a dainty black female strutted in, as regal feeling surrounding her. She stood there for a moment glancing over shoulder at the two fleeing wolves.
"What do you want, Shift?" Morg grunted, his voice flat.
Shift smiled. "What? You mean I'm not allowed to spend a little time with you?" she asked, settling down next to him.
Morg flattened his shredded ears. "I'm sorry, it's just... I've had a rough day."
Shift glanced at him. "Speedstorm again?"
"Yeah, and the darned coyote."
"What did he do this time?' she inquired.
Morg narrowed his yellow eyes. "The same as always. The exact opposite of what he's supposed to do! And he's been doing that for a while might I add," he raged. "Speedstorm doesn't seem to understand the importance of driving out or killing it!" He lashed his tail.
Shift laid her tail on his shoulders. "Give him more time. He's only been here for a little bit, not even two months," she soothed.
"I know, I know," he huffed. "But if we don't get rid of him soon, as I've explained many times, we might not have the food to survive the winter."
Shift tilted her head. "But we've managed before, haven't we? We've always managed to regain the food he steals."
Morg shook his head. "That's not it. There's been reports of him actually hunting not just stealing from the cache," he sighed.
"Don't worry. All of our wolves are strong, that coyote will be shaking in his flea-bitten skin and running with his tail between his legs by the time we're through with him" she exclaimed, her voice growing into a howl.
Morg smiled and nuzzled Shift. "You're enthusiasm is absolutely contagious, you know that?"
"Of course I know that, I take pride in it," she barked, puffing out her chest. "Anyways, I'll go organize a hunt and spread the enthusiasm along the way." She started to walk out.
"Thanks," Morg said, grinning and waving his tail in farewell. He then turned his back to the entrance of the den, and sat there hunched over and thinking.
